Microbial enhanced oil recovery: literature survey http://www.clw.csiro.au/publications/science/2008/ WFO-MicrobialOilRecovery.pdf This report is well referenced and contains some general information on enhanced recovery techniques and biosurfactants. Oil spill: Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_spill This Wikipedia entry is a good starting point for information on oil spills. Parts of it deal with bioremediation and the addition of dispersants.

Rapid Benzene Degradation in Methanogenic Sediments from a Petroleum-Contaminated Aquifer
In methanogenic sediments from a petroleum-contaminated aquifer, [14C]benzene was converted to 14CH4 and 14CO2 without an apparent lag. Phenol, acetate, and propionate were intermediates in benzene mineralization. These results suggest that alternative electron acceptors need not be available for there to be significant natural attenuation of benzene in some petroleum-contaminated aquifers.
متن کاملPetroleum pollution bioremediation using water-insoluble uric acid as the nitrogen source.
The biodegradation of hydrocarbon pollutants in open systems is limited by the availability of a utilizable nitrogen source. This limitation can be overcome by using uric acid. Enrichment cultures grown on crude oil-uric acid media yielded mixed and pure cultures that degraded petroleum. In a simulated open system, uric acid bound to crude oil and was available for bacterial growth and petroleu...
متن کاملEvaluation of petroleum-degrading potential of bacteria from water and sediment.
Bacteria from water and sediment of an oil-polluted harbor were examined for ability to degrade petroleum. Water samples contained a greater variety of bacterial species capable of degrading petroleum than sediment. Cultures from both water and sediment contained Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter spp. Bacteria present in the water samples produced significantly greater degradation of 2-,3-,4-, and ...
متن کاملMicrobial populations of crude oil spill polluted soils at the Jordan-Iraq desert (the Badia region)
Microbial populations' inhabitants in crude petroleum contaminated soils were analyzed in relation with the soil characteristics. A noticeable greater decline of bacterial counts and diversity but a prevalence of the genus Pseudomonas over the other identified genera in the fresh contaminated soils as compared to the old ones was observed.
متن کاملEnumeration of petroleum-degrading microorganisms.
A variety of factors, including concentration of oil, antibiotics, dyes, and inoculum washes, were examined to determine their effect on the total counts of microorganisms on oil-containing media. The media found to be best for enumerating petroleum-degrading microorganisms contained 0.5% (vol/vol) oil and 0.003% phenol red, with Fungizone added for isolating bacteria and streptomycin and tetra...
